Review of I Am Wrath (2016) by Tyler B — 27 Jan 2019

This movie had my eye the past couple of years largely due to the awful poster and the idea of Travolta doing DTV.. I figured it would be bad. However I did some looking into it and I found out it was directed by Chuck Russell who did the Mask and NOES 3 and I got excited. Also seen Chris Meloni and Rebecca De Mornay was in it so I said eff it and bought the DVD for 4 bucks at Wal Mart and made a late night viewing of it.

The result: I enjoyed it WAY more than I expected too. It's nothing groundbreaking in a grand way but it's the first true buddy viglante flick I've ever seen which itself is a big deal. Death Wish 3 teased it but it never got there; this one however went all the way with it and it was a blast. In some ways it's a cheapo Taken but that's not a minus imo. It reminds me a lot of Death Wish and that's not a minus either.

Only real gripes I have is not enough of De Mornay and the first 20-30 minutes kinda drag but it gets going and the climax is quite tense. The film itself is very tense and it makes for a fun ride. Acting's hit and miss; Travoita and Meloni had an awesome chemistry toghether and it's a pairing that ended up working quite well. De Mornay for what short time she had wasn't bad either just wish there was more of her. Their daughter wasn't bad as was her bubby. The baddies are cliched but the main thugs were hateable especially one with the face tat and that stupid look he gives lol. The cops were great at being cowards and the Governor worked well as the actor who played him is great at slimeballs. Directing wish Russell does an excellent job; this movie was quite lucky to have him. It's a shame he's doing DTV work as he always had a steady hand but he does well here and I loved his camera angels in certain scenes. It got up to 4.0 instead of 3.5 due to his direction.

Not bad for a DTV movie; Saban's trying that more now and I plan on viewing more of their stuff. This one's going on my favorite action flicks list for sure; one of the few DTV films I've really liked.
