Review of I Am Love (2010) by Mike M — 31 Jan 2010
Two parts high style to one part extreme silliness... Its vision of erotic bliss is like a perfume commercial retelling of "Lady Chatterley": shots of ripening blackberries, insects pollinating flowers, splendour in the long grass.
Amazingly, we're meant to take all this at face value, as we are the bankers in London boardrooms making earnest speeches about "doing good deeds in the world"; Guadagnino's po-facedness is such he even wants us to take his appropriation of the opera scene from "Philadelphia" seriously.
Suffice to say, when the film declares I Am Love, it does so with its tongue far from its cheek and its heart on its well-tailored sleeve: its lack of irony is absolute, admirable, and - for this viewer, at least - almost, *almost* beguiling.
