Review of I Am Love (2010) by Rosemary U — 13 Apr 2010
There are 3 moments in the film that I am not overly keen on. 2 more so because of the music - loud and aggressive, certainly passionate and emotional almost as if the audience is being told to feel a certain way: the "dog" chase (Tilda looking for future lover) and the funeral when Tilda loses it. The 3rd is the ending...
Otherwise the film is superb and hit all buttons on so many different levels without being overly sentimental.
Beautifully shot in a way that only European type films can be in summer (Sideways), lush with vegetation, water echoing in the background, only the beautiful architecture of cities shown, lovely monied people with beautiful classic outfits. Lots of colour.
Tilda Swinton (TS) speaks Italian throughout although once again it is a film featuring little dialogue. Just enough to guide the film into its final conclusion. Sub-titled. A feast for the eyes in every way.
Sensuous love stories around food, race, class, family, tradition, the future, business: set against backdrops of Italy predominantly. London/ers also gets a look in.
In terms of people there are lesbians, hetorosexuals, older, younger, Seikh, pregnant, Russian, sexed up, upstairs and downstairs people...something for everyone...
Enjoy!
In a sentence: tough times, find love, leave family.
