Review of I Am Love (2010) by Robbie M — 31 Aug 2010
This is the artsiest film I've watched in ages; I was frankly overwhelmed. Cold, cold, gorgeous always, colder, and then--what happened? It's a calculated strategy, and does it ever work. This is effected more by the performance of Tilda Swinton than her director's cinematic artifice, even if the former is his means to an end.
Three quarters of the movie you wonder who is this lady, and then (and screw the liberating romance, appetizing shrimp and all) all of a sudden before you is a great screen performance, character and actress equally important.
At the closing scene I was crying and laughing simultaneously, and the score--the preposterous score!--seemed to force-feed if not simply indulge both emotional reactions. What a fucking movie.
