This is one of those movies that helped to change American society. I wouldn't say it directly led to the abolition of chain-gangs in the south, but it sure awoke many people to the harshness of the camps.
It stays within the general theme of the book (I am a fugitive from a Georgia chaingang), except for some differences in the occupation of the main character. This movie has one of the most disturbing endings of any movie I have ever seen.
