Powerful and moving. Also one of the few pre-Code films that really held together well especially when it was lacking a musical score as many early sound films do. The pacing, imagery, and the use of background sound makes you forget there is no score to hold it together.
It's almost as if you're watching a film that was released 20 or 30 years later.
