Review of Hustle & Flow (2005) by Peter L — 05 Sep 2008
"It's hard out here for a pimp". Yes, but what about his, ahem, employees? This film is filled wall-to-wall with great performances, which is this film's salvation. Terrence Howard is SO good that it occasionally distracted me from a cliched and sometimes offensive storyline--not offensive because it's about pimps and ho's, but because the film is more concerned with whether Howard achieves his rap-star dreams than with what happens to the women he's left in his wake.
Well-done in some ways, it still felt icky. That said, Terrence Howard (one of my favorite actors) deserved his nomination, and the supporting performances (DJ Qualls, Ludacris, Isaac Hayes) are fun.
