Hunt for the Wilderpeople - my 'Film of the Year' by far. Almost every $150+ million megabuster I've seen this year failed to be even half as entertaining as Taika Waititi's latest cinematic gem.
Wonderful performances by Sam Neil and Julian Dennison (the newest legendary outlaw Ricky Baker) anchor an inspired tale of adventure, humor and heart, with some of the best set piece action scenes I've seen all year.
The stunning scenery of New Zealand hasn't looked better since the LOTR series. If I had to offer an 'it's like...' well, it's got a similar tone and sensibility to the films of Edgar Wright , and is every bit as original and well made as any of the Cornetto Trilogy pics.
I don't know how much longer the film will be playing on the big screen - but I seriously suggest making the effort to see it. And if you bitch and moan about too many sequels/reboots/remakes etc, then you've doubly got no excuse not to go and see Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
PS: I can't wait to see what Taika Waititi does with Thor: Ragnarok. All Thumbs Up!!!
