Review of Human Traffic (1999) by Ben O — 06 Apr 2008
Never before or since has a film captured the true feeling of 'weekenders'. Never has a filmmaker so accurately portrayed a nightclub. Justin Kerrigan puts his love of club culture on screen for all to see.
The highs, lows and inbetweens of partying are all on show here. So recognisable to any of us who partied in the late 90's (the film arriving in 1999, shortly before the whole scene collapsed in on itself). If I hadn't been there n done that, I'd think it was all made up.
Absolutely perfect casting. John Simm, as ever, is brilliant. Shaun Parkes' Koop is the coolest cat on the planet, even with his hang-ups.
And how can I not mention Danny Dyer. Before he started playing cockney hard men, here he plays the brilliant fuck-up Moff. Could easily have been a cartoon character, but Dyer brings a real warmth and humanity to the part.
Great cameos from Carl Cox, Howard Marks and Jo Brand as the voice of reason/reality.
With the assistance of Pete Tong, the music choices are excellent. It gives airtime to, nearly, every genre of dance music around at the time.
What a film. It's almost like watching a part of my life on screen.
1 question... whatever happened to Justin Kerrigan?
