Review of Howards End (1992) by Indira S — 23 Jul 2012
One of Merchant Ivory's more successful adaptations, Ivory captures the class conflict of Britain remarkably well. The film is beautifully shot and it's the locations that for me, truly brought this novel to life.
The acting is of course, outstanding, and as with The Remains of the Day, Hopkins and Thompson create a chemistry that's hard to beat. The intensity of their arguments is powerful stuff, as are their tears and sorrow.
Helena Bonham Carter is also perfectly cast as the scatty yet proudly principled Helen. An unmissable, understated epic piece of cinema.
