Review of House on Haunted Hill (1999) by Spiked W — 17 Nov 2010
The late 90s seemed to be the era of haunted house remakes, and, thankfully, this less-than-stellar remake of the William Castle/Vincent Price classic is at least better than the truly abysmal remake of Robert Wise's The Haunting.
I find this House on Haunted Hill to be enjoyable in the totally cheesy/derivative way, but the aspect that I really enjoyed was the characterization of the millionaire host played by Geoffrey Rush. In this film, he is a rollercoaster designer, but his character pays homage to William Castle's notorious passion for cinematic gimmicks.
This nod to Castle made Rush's character enjoyable to me and made the film more worth watching. An unnecessary and unoriginal remake, yes, but a somewhat enjoyable one nonetheless.
