Review of House on Haunted Hill (1959) by Richard D — 18 Feb 2014
A movie like House on Haunted Hill is a good example that not all movies are created for the same equal purpose. Some are destined to be covered with awards, some are made to simply make us laugh, and some are made purely for fun.
There is a right and wrong way for all of those, and this movie shows perfectly the "fun" category. Vincent Price and William Castle perfectly create a spooky haunted house atmosphere for this film.
We never cringe at the scares, we gasp a bit then laugh and go on to the next, which is a perfect setup for such a film. It's hard to describe in words this picture, but I can definitely say it's a blast to sit through, and once you start you shift into the world of drive ins, midnight movies, and cheesy gimmicks of horror.
Honestly just go watch it, especially around Halloween, and experience one of the most memorable classic horror movies.
