Review of House of Games (1987) by Dan K — 18 Jan 2010
Weird unnatural acting and dated off-putting clothes. I was disappointed to not find any of Mamet's usual wicked dialogue and the acting lacked the comedic sense of timing found in Glengarry. Not to mention that the plot itself was predicable and, in parts, completely unbelievable.
Contrary to most people's comments here, I have to say that I quite enjoyed the climax; the idea that Joe Mantegna never gave in, and continued to exhibit confidence even at his moment of dieing was when the film began to feel like a Mamet.
.. shame there wasn't more of it.
