Review of House of Games (1987) by Jim R — 19 Feb 2011
It's far from a perfect film, but anyone interested in a good con will easily have their socks blown off by this alternatively intense and sensual thriller.
Any Mamet film brings a certain expectation when it comes to writing, the first ones being sharp dialogue and complex characterizations. The the latter plays a huge part in the film's plot, the former can occasionally come across as an impediment in the few moments when the characters break to deliver a snappy line.
Nevertheless, it's written, directed, and acted with panache, the latter likely aided by Mamet's choice to stick to the regulars with whom he had become friendly, giving them a natural chemistry that cannot be faked.
