Review of Hour of the Wolf (1968) by Trevor C — 11 Nov 2010
One of the things that caught my attention, which was very bizarre in this very bizarre film, was that we never see the title until 40 or so minutes into the filmre (just mere observation). this is the first Bergman film I've ever seen, and, as I recall, there is only few brief minutes of calm happiness between the artist and his wife, and after that its pure, slow tension and not a minute of relief.
this is partly why Hour of the Wolf is such a fantastic film. for me, what made this film truly great was the simple yet twisted visuals, which alone can begin to make you feel exactly what Johan (the disturbed artist) feels - though eventually the simple images become extremely deranged and bizarre, from a man walking on the wall and ceiling to a woman tearing her face and eyes out.
the fantastic performances help add to this almost unbearable feeling tension, and that mixed with the surreal visuals and masterful directing make this film a masterpiece of horror.
