Review of Hotel Rwanda (2004) by Joseph V — 17 Nov 2010
Hotel Rwanda is one of those ignored films that never have had a commercial breakthrough. That doesn't mean it isn't a great film. This is the first film I know of that has gotten into the touchy but terrible subject of the Rwandan Genocide.
What surprised me was that it came from the view of a hotel worker hounding in refugees and repeatedly protects them with bribes, alcohol, and his high ranking connections. The acting and plot was just great and I loved how they didn't substitute the drama for some cheesy action scenes.
This film was bold enough not to hold back the bloody side of the genocide. This film shows not only how this Holocaust happened, but how the rest of the world reacted, primarily the rich Western world.
One line that summarized how the West reacted was something like, "They'll just look at their TVs and be like, 'Oh my god, that's terrible,' and continue on eating their dinner.".
