Review of Horrible Bosses 2 (2014) by Chris Q — 23 Jan 2015
As someone who enjoyed the first film a great deal, I was a tad disappointed, but not overtly disgusted by this latest entry. (I hope to Christ they don't cap this off as a trilogy.) While at times, the jokes work due to the committed cast and their chemistry, but the characters have become more inept in just within themselves and how they behave and react. It honestly was off-putting to see what was presented as naive, everyday-man individuals fighting against the powers to be become just walking, talking banal stock characters. The film squanders a lot of potential, and not to mention talent (Waltz is pretty useless in here), and just plods along with a lack of adroitness.
The laughs are spare but do hit the mark -- especially Kevin Spacey, who does a wonderful job lambasting these dim-witted trio of incompetents -- and Chris Pine is so game for this that his performance is actually a breathe of fresh air in the film.
The film is not totally disposable; it merely just exists because it is a sequel.
