Review of Hoosiers (1986) by Jim M — 22 Oct 2009
The movie is the story of second chances. Gene Hackman plays a coach barred from coaching after hitting a player. He takes a job in a small Indiana town coaching high school basketball. Basketball is a religion in Indiana and the movie does a fantastic job of showing this reverence.
Ultimately the story is a spiritual journey. As the coach shapes the team he is tested and it his personal sacrifice and dedication to his team that wins over the town and players. Basketball demonstrates that the whole is not a sum of its parts; that a team can transcend it individual limitations.
We see this apotheosis when the team meets a more talented and experienced team in the state finals and their triumph lifts and elevates us all.
