Review of Hoosiers (1986) by Nathan C — 22 Aug 2012
A riveting and accomplished sports melodrama. Gene Hackman delivers a great performance as the no-nonsense coach, Dennis Hopper plays a heartfelt supporting role, and the team of young players does a commendable job on and off the court.
This would be standard fare, but the acting, skillfully choreographed basketball action, and nicely-weaved themes of redemption help it transcend its cliches. With a good score and modest 50's small town ambience as well as a neat sense of humor, film does its charm and scores.
By film's end, I was actually rooting for Hackman's team. Ironically, this film has more explosive entertainment than a single game of basketball I have watched.
