Review of Hoosiers (1986) by Matt K — 17 May 2008
I usually stay away from sports movies. I tend to find them bland and formulaic. This movie makes me want to revisit that decision. This movie is the best sports movie that I've ever seen. The action is kinetic, the score is great, and the cinematography is top notch (with some well placed slow motion) so all of the basketball scenes are ridiculously exciting and suspenseful.
Gene Hackman is fantastic as the new coach that shakes things up. And Dennis Hopper, oh Dennis Hopper! Why are you so amazing. He plays the town drunk perfectly and my heart really went out to him. So basically I loved everything about this movie.
I honestly can't think of one bad thing to say about it except that I didn't want it to ever end. (But of course if it was a never-ending movie then nobody would watch it and it would probably suck .
.. so yeah) Oh and I hate basketball, so all of this is especially amazing. For the first time I was excited to watch a basketball game.
