Review of Honeymoon (2014) by Thomas W — 22 Sep 2014
Newlyweds Paul (Harry Treadaway - City of Ember) and Bea (Rose Leslie - 'Game of Thrones') profess their love and devotion to one another in a videotaped message to one another captured in bits and pieces by others at their wedding and spliced together as a cutesy wedding memento recounting their first date and first meal together as well as where and when he proposed to her etc.
etc. etc. The video conveys quite clearly that these two lovebirds are smitten with one another as they head off to a remote country house that belongs to her family for their honeymoon where it'll just be them, the sky and nature for their first week of married bliss! When Paul is awakened by a blinding light in the middle of the night, he is even more startled when he realizes Bea is nowhere to be found.
After frantically searching the house, he finds her wandering alone outside in a disoriented daze. Only the next morning, all is not as it should be as Bea begins to act peculiar and display odd and unusual mannerisms.
Her behavior becomes more erratic as she takes to writing confessions over and over again in a journal Paul can make little sense out of. When Paul begins to suspect that something sinister occurred during Bea's "sleepwalking" through the forest, Bea reveals exactly what Paul has feared hearing! As Paul frantically fears he is losing Bea to something beyond his control, is his love enough to wrestle Bea away from whatever it is that is getting its grasp on her? I chilling finale will likely startle some viewers but I have to admit I was left scratching my head long before the film's final few moments.
I'm not sure what happened here ... and I don't even know where I lost the narrative as the "shock" near the ending feels more "lazy" than either smart or shocking. I mean, and .
..? If someone makes it all the way to the end: WTF was that chord?!?
