Review of Holy Smoke (1921) by Kate H — 14 Aug 2007
I'm not quite sure how I feel about this movie to be quite honest. I found the subject matter concerning Kate Winslets character fascinating and I imagined that this film would be a stand-off of intellect between her character Ruth and Pj (Keitels), on the religion vs reason.
The second half of the movie however caught me quite off guard and I found Keitels decline a little hard to believe as he had been this solid rock before hand, but I assume this was the point. Despite that their relationship did have a believable chemistry, its just the fact that Keitel let it unfold him is the part I found hard to completely believe.
Kate Winslet fans I don't feel will dissapointed however as she is as usual at the top of her game, accompanynied by the amazing cinematography by Dion Beebes, a man who has never failed to impress, if anything see this film to see a true master at work.
