Review of Holy Smoke (1921) by Mancy M — 31 May 2008
I love this movie! Harvey Keitel really delivers true macho-ism, as the know-all and fix-all man. But Kate's portrayal as the true-to-herself Ruth is so much more powerful. I love how everyone in the film is so flawed, and yet all their attention is on Ruth's choice in faith and stay in India.
I like how the tables turn as PJ believes that he is making progress with Ruth's deprogramming, but it is with the stripping of Ruth's philosophies that PJ is finding himself being drawn to her and the truth of what she believes.
