Review of Hoffa (1992) by Josh H — 18 Sep 2008
Not knowing a lot about Hoffa, I always wanted to see this. But naturally, any time I watch a historical drama, I make a point to read up on it to see how accurate it is afterward. I read an interview with the daughter of Jimmy Hoffa and she thought that Nicholson's performance was "eerie.
" I already thought it was a tremendous performance, but if the guy's DAUGHTER is impressed...I don't think you can get a better endorsement than that. There aren't too many HUGE liberties taken with this film.
..well, there are, but nothing that I think really ruins anything. Some might complain about the way that his infamous (and mysterious) disappearance was portrayed (apparently he disappeared at a restaurant in the Detroit area.
..not at a diner in the middle of nowhere) -- but honestly, I thought the way they did it (for Hollywood's sake) worked REALLY well. I'm sure it didn't happen EXACTLY like that...but I'm sure it was pretty darn similar.
Jack carries this movie, and it has to be one of his greatest achievements, and is well worth checking out if you catch it -- like I did -- on a movie channel one day.
