Review of Hobson's Choice (1954) by Charles P — 14 Dec 2010
I found out one thing when I watched this movie: David Lean is only capable of making great films! Brief Encounter (1945), Great Expectations (1946), Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965) and this one, Hobson's Choice (1954), are just *some* of his amazing repertoire!
In Hobson's Choice, the brilliant Charles Laughton plays Henry Hobson who runs a shoe shop somewhere in 19th century England. He is a widower who spends a lot of time at the pub with his mates, while his 3 daughters run the shoe business. Or, rather: the oldest of them. Everything is fine until one day, the oldest daughter decides to get married...
A carload of fun and a terrific film -- watch it!
