Review of Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) by Kevin N — 09 Mar 2009
Resnais had one of the very strongest eyes for the cinema, a vision which saw images within images and which dealt with things as big as holocausts to things as small as skin pores. This dream-like poem is no exception, placing his two beautiful subjects in Hiroshima to explore the ugliness which has plagued their lives.
The juxtaposition of disturbing and picturesque images is extraordinarily composed, but the pulsing narrative remains literary. Emmanuelle Riva is so naturally tragic it is otherworldy.
