Review of Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) by Stephen H — 18 Mar 2012
This is (much to the surprise of some of my friends) my favorite New Wave film. Possibly because it contains such an incredible depth of emotion... possibly because I can relate to it. In the end I guess what it boils down to is that this is a very personal film for me, and frankly, one of the reasons I decided to try and become a screenwriter in the first place.
It's haunting and heartbreaking... an intense exploration of how we try to understand tragedies which can never be truly considered. The kind of penetrating socio-political commentary one expects from the French new wave, but with less detachment than usual.
An achingly beautiful film which will always be in my collection.
