Review of Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) by Eduardo C — 02 Dec 2012
Provocative, deeply beguiling, mysterious masterpiece that draws parallels between the sufferings of the Hiroshima martyrs and a French woman whose German soldier lover was killed by a sniper in the waning days of the war.
. Years later she experiences a catharsis in Hiroshima when she finally confides her story to just one person, her Japanese lover, who then proceeds to speak to her as if he were the deceased soldier, and yearns to keep her despite both of them being married.
He's able to do so not because of some farcical fantasy, but because he has much empathy for her, having survived the atomic blast, he has suffered as much as she, and therefore has deep understanding.
It's deeply mystical, profound and incredibly romantic.
