Review of Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) by Zack B — 12 Sep 2012
The opening scene juxtaposing the views of someone far removed from the Hiroshima bombing with the isolated, pain stricken view of a Japanese man obviously close to it, is devastating. Resnais uses gut wrenching archive footage and painfully ignorant and distant voice over dialogue to hammer this point home, and the effect is monumental.
The editing and camera work is masterful and the musical score is absolutely haunting. I was shocked at how far ahead this film was from its time.
