Review of Highlander: The Source (2007) by Amanda W — 18 Mar 2008
I was looking forward to it after Highlander Endgame, which I enjoyed. The idea was good but it was cut off short and horribly executed. The special effects were shortbus special. They looked like they were done by someone who learned film-making in the 50's and then buried their head in the sand through the Matrix/Lord of the Rings revolution. Completely obvious, saw the end coming a mile away, and yet they still felt the need to spell it out for me at the end in a rundown worthy of a tv "previously on". So for fans of the franchise, I want to spare you the pain of actually watching it. So SPOILER ALERT!
There can be only one immortal who can pass the Source's test and thus be allowed to father children, and surprise, surprise, It's Duncan McLeod. What they fail to explain is what happens next? Does the child save the world? Does McLeod get his immortality back? Does Methos (who is totally un-Methos-like in this movie) survive the cannibals? Why is Joe still alive in what appears to be the distant apocolyptic future? Hopefully these questions, and so many more will never be answered by this particular group of film (I use the term losely) makers.
In a footnote, I looked up other movies made by Brett Leonard and was quite surprised to find that he had actually made other films before, and that at least one of them was enjoyable. Who knew?
