Review of High Plains Drifter (1973) by Toby G — 28 Jul 2007
This is one of Eastwood?s earliest directing efforts. There are flashes of brilliance in this movie that foreshadow some his later work as a director. This picture has much in common with Unforgiven but it suffers from that comparison.
Unforgiven is more textured film with stronger performances from better actors, but the comparison between the films shows Eastwood?s growth as a director. He is clearly one of the best directors working today and in this earlier effort it is possible to see some of the reasons why.
This is better than average Western but it is slightly below Eastwood?s best.
