Review of High Fidelity (2000) by Rex A — 26 Jan 2014
This movie surprised me. A colleague recommended it as one of those "highly quotable" movies; I wasn't particularly impressed with the first act, which is basically spent establishing what an aimless, self-centered jerk John Cusack's character is, and trying (with some success) to get you to like him. I didn't find this part particularly funny, although it is definitely quotable.
Halfway through the movie, though, things take a different turn, and we find that same guy suddenly realizing that there are things in the world besides his navel-gazing that are worth spending time and energy on, including the girlfriend he has all but driven completely out of his life. It winds up turning into a sweet love story, which is certainly not what I expected!
I'm not sure it makes my Top Five Favorite Movies list, but in the end, I enjoyed it.
