Review of Hesher (2010) by Jack G — 02 Dec 2012
Aside from some story-logic questions (i.e. something with Hesher and Nicole about 2/3 the way into the film that just didn't make sense given what we've seen up till them), it's a very solid, dramatically and comedically enjoyable film, daringly mixing sobered, super-dark story of a family still numb with grief over the death of the matriarch of the house, and a weird 'Metallica-Mary Poppins' who comes into their lives and turns shit upside down. All of the acting makes it a must-see on its own, but it also reveals JGL perfectly capable (and so fucking ready) to play hardcore roles like this when asked. It's one of his best performances, and ditto Rainn Wilson. Devin Brochu is a new, likable find, and Piper Laurie is... holy shit that's Piper Laurie?
And it makes great use of Kill em All/And Justice for All Metallica tracks, another must-see reason. Not great, but very close.
