Review of Hereditary (2018) by Torion O — 08 Jun 2018
The most impactful aspect of this horror movie isn't the traditional horror features but the family dynamics. The cinematography is also unique and very well done to match what the film is going for in that it straddles the dimensions of what is real and what is manufactured via very wide shots.
The acting by everyone here, especially Toni Collette, is incredible. What I absolutely love about horror are the subtle things such as things you notice at the edges of the frame, and given this film's use of long takes and wide shots the subtle things you notice linger there and continue to unnerve you.
I am unsure how much I missed and feel like a second viewing would substantially provide me with a lot more, though from what I got it is a very good film. I will say the contrast of the two primary themes, that is the family dynamic and the supernatural, don't entirely mesh to create something totally satisfying by the end, however for the most part they work together to create a sort of suspense and mystery as to what is really going on.
