Hereditary....

This movie is rated so high by the critics as a wonderful tale of horror and chills that revitalize the classical regions of horror. In reality the most redeemable feature of the film is the wonderful Toni Collette, playing as a grieving mother, Annie Graham. The second best thing is a great graphical detail on certain portions of the movie; say a death.

In short; this movie has zero direction of where it was going. At length, it was first a psychological thriller about a mother going through depression and grief and coming to terms. Then it suddenly changes to a story about ghosts and otherworldly forces. Lastly, at the movie's final act, a cultist order that reawakens an ancient demon. With all the chages that this movie had half-way through it just left me, the viewer feeling dazed and confused as suddenly Annie is possessed and oh, look at that. She's crawling on the walls.

This movie is what could've been a wonderful story about a family that suffers a loss, a brother who blames himself for the death of a sister, a mother trying her damnedest to not place blame, and a father who is trying to keep what little of the family together; but is replaced with mediocre scares and a half-finished plot that feels more like the scrawling of a madman than a coherent story of loss. The most redeeming portion of the movie is, as said, Toni Collette as she plays a mother experiencing all five stages of grief, before suddenly becoming possessed and crawling up walls.

In conclusion the movie could've been something beautiful but lost sight of its self to the point of irredeemable confusion.
