Review of Hereditary (2018) by Jonathan B — 02 Jul 2018
Poor Toni Collette is put through the wringer by her dysfunctional family and the series of events that unfold over the course of Hereditary. As the story progresses, it transpires that the family has been manipulated by dark and powerful forces that have a bizarre and evil plan to fulfil.
I have to say Toni Collette is brilliant in the central role of Annie Graham. Almost from the opening seconds, we journey with her as she spirals into a world of nightmare and madness. However it is young Milly Shapiro as the daughter, Charlie, that will linger in the mind.
She is a child that oozes malice and malevolence which makes the twist in her story all the more unsettling. This is a story that doesn't quite go as you thought it would. Director Ari Aster calls to mind elements of Rosemary's Baby in this movie that I found unsettling and creepy rather than shocking and scary.
That's not to say that there weren't scenes that made me jump, it is just that I found this more a smouldering burn rather than the roller coaster I had expected from the trailers and publicity.
