Review of Hereafter (2010) by William K — 18 Oct 2011
This movie was somewhat of a surprise for me. On one hand, many of the performances were really engaging; Matt Damon seems to be developing into a more substantial actor and, given better material, would have been really impressive in this film.
My bete noir of late is the overwhelming paucity of good script writing; the sacrifice of good story-telling in place of visual effects. Hereafter, however, has the basis of an interesting story, as the last 30-40 minutes of this movie demonstrates.
It is just not cohesive from the beginning to the end. Parts of the story-line do not seem to have much to do with the plot for extended periods only to hint at later developments before the director plunges us into another direction.
I really loved Matt Damon's character, could have done without the CGI tsunami and was pleased and interested to see Cecile de France cast wonderfully, in place of the usual vapid Hollywood babes.
