Review of Hereafter (2010) by Dawdlingpoet — 22 Nov 2021
This is quite an emotional watch at times, although its not your average out and out 'weepy'. It follows numerous people, from a French lady to a young boy in London, who have issues to do with death following recent events. Its quite thought provoking and I found it very intriguing seeing things from the different characters perspectives and I certainly found myself feeling sorry for most of them, for different reasons (I won't elaborate so as not to provide spoilers).
I suppose, to some extent, the main themes (death, or mortality, aside) it covers include loss, disappointment and curiosity of/about the unknown. I admit the whole subject area of death is something that intrigues me - I've wondered about what may, or may not, happen after you die since I was young, so this films plot appealed to me as soon as I came across it and it didn't disappoint me as the theme is sensitively handled. I was particularly interested in George (Matt Damons character), his perspective on things. I would definitely recommend this film if it sounds of interest to you, yes. Also, just to add, some of the film is subtitled, due to one of the stories focussing on a lady in France, so if you don't understand French then the subtitles may or may not be an issue but it didn't bother me too much, as I watch a fair bit of world cinema anyway.
