Review of Heaven's Gate (1980) by Bill C — 12 Jun 2013
Noisy, smokey, completely muddled, featuring some of the most clichéd dialogue ever to offend both the "cultivated" and the "uncultivated" ear. The only thing missing from the absurd Harvard sequence is Dolly Levi.
It is singularly remarkable that so little of the extravagant production design and conspicuous attention to detail actually works. Michael Cimino is in so far over his head even some of the finest work by the great cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond can't rescue this film.
