It isn't exactly original to say that this is too long. Nor is it original to say that it isn't a complete disaster. The reason being that both of those comments are correct. If not for a rip-roaring finale this may well have been a lost cause.
Despite a dire need for severe editing, perhaps even as much as an hour, Heaven's Gate does (eventually) pay-off for the more patient cinema-goers among us.
