Review of Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison (1957) by Kaci M — 05 Jul 2004
Well, it's been awhile, hasn't it? Well, I guess it hasn't been so long, but I've seen a bunch more movies to review, so let's get to it!.
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb ***1/2.
A comedy about nuclear war and imminent nuclear destruction that's surprisingly funny. A mad general who believes the Communists want to destroy humanity using flouridation orders a nuclear attack on Soviet Russia. The bomber pilots have no idea that the nuclear strike hasn't been ordered by the government, the US government frantically tries to signal the planes to stop, and said general fights off military troops trying to capture him.
Peter Sellers is very funny, playing the roles of President Mirkin Muffley, Officer Mandrake of the RAF, and the nuclear advisor Dr. Strangelove, who struggles with keeping his Nazi urges secret. But the real comic tour de force is George C. Scott as General "Buck" Turgidson, played with comic zest and an animated grace, crazy and frequently stuffing gum into his mouth when he's excited.
The film is done in black and white, which gives it a surprisingly realistic feel. One thinks that if filmed in color it would reduce the realism of the picture, and the overall effect comes out well..
Blade Runner ***.
A futuristic crime noir adapted from a story by the great SF novelist Philip K. Dick, and directed with considerable style by Ridley Scott, Blade Runner is about a tream of humanlike androids, replicants, escaping to Earth and running wild in Los Angeles circa 2019, trying to find a way to lengthen their preset four year lifespan. Harrison Ford plays Rick Deckard, a Blade Runner assigned to tracking down and destroying the renegade replicants.
Blade Runner's futuristic LA is dreary and waterlogged, a marvel of design and special effects, which really is the highlight of the film. While consistantly well acted, the film's plot only seems to be there to hold together the fantastic world built around it. But don't let that bother you, just witness the spectacle.
Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison ***.
A marine, played by Robert Mitchum, and a nun, Deborah Kerr, are stranded on a deserted island and forced to survive when Japanese troops make the island their base. Very good chemistry between the two leads and tense action scenes make a very watchable movie.
SSX 3 ***.
A fun and fast snowboarding game with marvelous level designs and remarkable depth. Great fun for the casual and expert gamer.
I watched Spider-Man today, and I'll be seeing the sequel tomorrow, so I'll go for the double whammy review tomorrow.

PS: I hate it when religious radio cuts in on my NPR.
