Review of Heaven (2002) by Jebus C — 04 Apr 2009
Some serious talent attached to this one. From the pen of Krzysztof Kieslowski (intended as part of a trilogy of films after the Three Colors trilogy). He died. Produced by both Sydney Pollack and Anthony Minghella.
Both also dead now. Cate Blanchett is very much on the cusp of greatness here. Aware of how to emote without saying anything and choosing her emotions to the point where they'd make the most impact.
Sadly the script goes off the wheels after an hour with the head shaving the unconvincing love story. The first hour is really solid though. All about revenge! Good stuff. Tom Tykwer (of Lola Rennt fame) directs and he's somewhat hit and miss during the runtime.
Some scenes work fine but the Blanchett-Ribisi pairing works best when they're acting with subtle glances and moments. As soon as they run off together it falls apart. A fine effort but with all this talent involved I expected it to hit higher notes.
