Review of Heat (1995) by Jeremy B — 04 Sep 2012
Some directors just have a knack for certain genres. If you are looking for an ultra real crime drama, grab a flick by Michael Mann. He has been giving unapologetic glimpses into the dark violent city for years. He is good at it. Heat is a great example of his prowess. Its dark, it's violent, all the characters have real life flaws, they are REAL and they have learned how to function in THEIR culture. Watch for broad sweeping night skylines, and intersting shots outside car windshields looking in as they are driving and talking.
Little stuff he does to make you feel like you are no longer in your happy little home, your out there, on the streets and if you are a crook or a cop you had better learn the rules of the streets.
If you have not yet seen Heat rent it immediately. Fantastic characters including the clashing of the great Al Pacino and greater Robert Deniro. Deniro is flat out scary in his business approach to crime. Pacino is brilliant as a cop struggling with his personal life because he is only knows the streets. Val Kilmer and Tom Sizemore add interesting support to the cast.
Its long but you wont notice, there are lots of intertwining stories that keep you gripped.
