Review of Hearts Beat Loud (2018) by Alan W — 17 Nov 2018
There's so much going on in Hearts Beat Loud, it feels like they are fighting each other for space yet despite this crowdedness, nothing too dramatic happens as if it's worried about getting too excited about nothing.
This has a father and daughter drama at its core but revolving around it, you'll find a LGBT love story, a granny with Alzheimer's, a widower dad's hesitant romance with an equally shy landlady, a commentary on the modern music scene and what happens if Sam Malone retires and got into pot.
Central performances by Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons are naturalistic, warm and heartfelt and they are ably supported by actors taking a break from their normal jobs for a few days of fun with the duo: namely, Blythe Danner, Toni Collette and as previously mentioned, Ted Danson.
Keegan DeWitt's hummable tunes add further charm to the proceedings and writer-director Brett Haley's gently pleasing indie drama will no doubt serve the niche market comprising mainly of fathers and daughters who still have a vinyl collection.
