Review of Hearts Beat Loud (2018) by Andy D — 02 Nov 2018
HEARTS BEAT LOUD - It has many problems, and doesn't work as a whole, but it has parts that make me feel good, very good.
Mainly the joy of discovery and creation, the thrill of an actual concert performance, and tragedies (changes) turning out to be liveable.
I love a good bad ending. "This wasn't sustainable, but it was beautiful while it lasted." I am glad the Titanic sank. (movie reference).
I was afraid we would have to pretend the music is good, but it actually kind of is. It's exactly at the point where you're not wowed, but you think - Hey, that person wrote that, and there's something to it! It's the music the characters need.
Definitely saw some people in costumes, and actors playing, but genuine interactions slipped in, as well as interesting imagery.
It has good parts, you have to look for them.
There's a beauty to its imperfection.
