Review of Heart of Glass (1976) by Tibor B — 16 Aug 2008
On the surface it's a folkloric tale of an 18th century Bavarian village, shocked by the death of a glassmaking master who was the only person with knowledge of creating valuable ruby glass. A prophetic herdsman warns the town of its doom.
However, Herzog pretty much disregards conventional narrative, focusing on creating a mesmerising mood through music and landscape, but most significantly the actors performances. All the actors except the clairvoyant acted under hypnosis, and the results are quite bizarre and certainly unique.
It's undeniably a very slow, obscure film but those with some patience and sympathies to Herzogs style and vision should find it rewarding.
