Review of Heart of Glass (1976) by Tor M — 02 Jun 2016
I'm a big Herzog fan and for me this is the hardest one to rate yet. It's very far out, still quite simple. It's very open for interpretation and something of it's own.
It's said that Herzog hypnotized the actors here - that may explain the special performances. They look lost, way out of scale, but at the same time very into the story.
The story is circling round a glass blower and the small community around him. They drink, they chat, they make glass. More like an absurd dark comedy even if it's never a funny film. Still, it's never a big drama either. It's an experiment. Reason is put aside.
Maybe a bit slow as it seem quite lenghty with only 90 minutes of playime and there are also few highlight scenes here. Cool songs and great scenery at times in this mesmerizing yet difficult film.
I rate this mostly with the thaughts about the craftmanship and the atmosphere since the film is very floating and obscure. Never entertaining, always interesting.
6.5 out of 10 horses.
