Review of He Never Died (2015) by Anthony B — 08 Mar 2018
The best film on Netflix you're not watching. He Never Died is the quintessential hidden gem. A movie that by all rights should be abysmal but is by some miracle astoundingly excellent. Masterfully executed with the feel of a graphic novel adaptation and a lead performance that had me saying what I am dead certain has never been said before in any language, "Henry Rollins was perfect for the role.
" To be honest, I am still not entirely convinced Rollins can act, but here he shines brighter than the sun for two reasons, A: he has undeniable screen presence and B: the director cleverly uses the aged rock god's would-be problematic woodenness to his advantage by focusing on it as an endearing quality of a mostly off-putting protagonist.
Lastly, He Never Died stands out because in addition to being kickass and hilarious, it is surprisingly restrained and tasteful, especially given the material. Don't get me wrong, as a horror-comedy it delivers on the gore, it just never feels forced, cheap, or gratuitous.
Like the main character himself, the story only uses violence when necessary (spoiler: it's often necessary) but when the occasion calls for it, the film goes for the jugular, sometimes quite literally.
