Review of Shadow of the Vampire (2000) by Garrett R — 02 Nov 2009
After Merhige's soul-chilling art-horror debut, The Begotten, blew me away all those years ago, I was disappointed to discover that this less-than-atmospheric movie left me colder than a vampire's nipples.
Ham-fisted pacing and day-time TV soap opera lighting removed all sense of fear while the humorous possibilities are ignored, hidden or mis-directed, leaving its impressive cast and concept floundering in the ruins.
In the hands of a Lynch or a Snyder even, this could have been a modern Grand Guignol movie standard but instead, its a squandered opportunity. Very disappointed. 1 star for the Count Orloch's creepy wax face.
