Review of He Loves Me… He Loves Me Not (2002) by Cory T — 30 Dec 2007
Audrey Tautou is a lovely actress with an intensely whimsical screen presence, and here she uses that whim to convey a character who is both obsessed and intensely deranged. It is quite unlike anything she has ever made, but it is still a wonderful piece of acting on her part.
The story reminds me, immensely, of Fatal Attraction... but with French people: Rich, successful cardiologist has one time affair with a simplistic, normal woman, who turns out to be so obsessively in love with him, she will do anything- literally anything- to be with him.
Tautou's character becomes so involved with this doctor that she starts sending him letters and tickets to go away for weekend trips, when he never sent her anything to begin with. She becomes a wedge-driving force between the doctor and his pregnant wife, and decides for herself that if she can't have him- no one will.
This movie is a perfect example of genre-transcending material that feels so much more realized and understood than the standard plot-driven movies. This is not necessarily a romantic-comedy, but it is not necessarily a thriller either, as it would be in the specific vain of Fatal Attraction. No, this movie is very objective about the details of its plot, leaving the audience to infer as they will.
